Bully Bluegill Spider

History of the Pattern

The Bully Bluegill Spider is an excellent bluegill pattern. The pattern was made popular by Terry and Roxanne Wilson, expert bluegill fly fishers. It is a good idea to carry the Bully in various colors.

Materials

  • Hook: Standard wet-fly hook (example: Lightning Strike NW1), size 8-12

  • Thread: Black (example: Uni 6/0, UTC 140D)

  • Legs: Round rubber - (Your choice color)

  • Body: Ultra Chenille - (Your choice of color)

  • Weight: Lead or lead-free wire (.030” or .035”) (Use a lighter lead wire to slow flies descent)

Tying Instructions

  • Tie down the tag end of the lead so that the end of the lead wire is at a point half way down the shank and pointing towards the eye. Wrap the thread over the wire to a point slightly in front of the end of the shank.

  • Wrap the lead toward the eye over the lead base to the half way point on the shank. Break off the lead. (This will form a large belly towards the end of the fly when finished.)

  • Tie in a piece of chenille at the bend. Bring the thread forward and secure the lead wire. Bring the thread to a point two eye lengths behind the eye.

  • Wrap the chenille forward and tie off two eye lengths behind the eye.

  • Fold a round rubber leg in two. With the two lose ends pointing rearward, tie in the rubber legs behind the eye. There should be an equal amount of rubber legs in front and behind the tie in point.

  • Sweep all four parts of the rubber legs towards the rear and secure. Cut the loop so that you have four legs pointing towards the rear. Trim the legs to your length.

  • Form a head, whip-finish and cement the head.
