The Big Hurt
History of the Pattern
This is an old pattern, but has never lost it’s popularity on Ozarks trout streams.
Larry Hurt, a regular at Hargrove’s shop, single handily has seen to the resurrection of this pattern. This is in the top 3 best selling flies at the shop - and for good reason, it simply works everywhere!
Materials
Hook: 1/100 oz. Jig hook (gold), with the lead painted white with Wapsi Powder Paint
Thread: White (example: Uni 6/0, UTC 140D)
Body: DMC Embroidery Thread (B5200) .
Tying Instructions
Paint the Jig head with Wapsi Powder paint (white)
Mount the jig in the vise
Start the thread behind the bead and capture 2 or 3 strands of the DMC embroidery thread wrapping to the bend of the hook
Wrap the thread back to the lead head
Wrap the DMC embroidery thread up the hook shank to the lead head and tie down with tying thread
Whip finish and repeat. You’ll need a few dozen of these once your friends see how well it works

Be sure the tippet is perpendicular to the shank so the fly rides somewhat parallel to the bottom
